With 21 years of business in Maine, Mexicali Blues is continually striving to sustainably grow through retailing a responsibly imported line of clothing, jewelry, accessories, décor and global goodies. Each store is opulently merchandised to the point of overflowing with Mexicali’s own worldly collections and is accented with an inviting staff to make each shopping experience unique. From the opening of the first store on Exchange St. in Portland , Mexicali Blues has seen a steady growth to four store locations (Portland, Newcastle, Raymond and Freeport) and a thriving ecommerce website www.mexicaliblues.com.
Shopping at Mexicali Blues is a truly fascinating shopping experience. Upon entering, customers are greeted warmly by a knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff and find their senses transported to the worldly marketplaces from which Mexicali has responsibly imported its merchandise. Mexicali Blues’ stores might be considered boutique spaces, but with more merchandise displayed than most large outlet stores they more closely reflect opulent street side kiosks or bazaars in a far off land.
“Clothing that fits your mind, jewelry to accent your life”, is the registered tag line for the company’s merchandise, directly imported by the Erskines. By traveling to markets and meeting personally with the artisans and families who create the merchandise, Mexicali Blues feels confident that every aspect of their business embraces responsibility. Nearly everything is an off shoot of a buying trip and each garment is adorned with a Mexicali Blues tag explaining responsible buying habits and discerning which garments are now certified fair trade certified. Because Mexicali Blues has created a direct supply chain, they are not only able to pass savings on to the customer but can provide truly unique lines that will not be found elsewhere.
Mexicali has outgrown its original “hippie-shop” image. Branding its new and multifaceted yet distinctive image was one of the deciding factors in selecting Freeport as the most recent location. Of course, Mexicali still has a great selection of tie-dyes and band t-shirts, but roughly 50% of their sales are from imported clothing, 80% of which are in women’s fashions. Mexicali Blues also has one of Maine’s largest collections of sterling silver gemstone jewelry, another large component of their sales. Each Mexicali store has a unique jewelry selection made up of over 175 gem varieties. The abundant assortment of eclectic gifts, jewelry, accessories and apparel from around the world as well as the contagious enthusiasm of their staff are what make Mexicali stand out among other import stores.
You can check them out at http://www.mexicaliblues.com or in any of their four locations in Maine; Portland, Newcastle, Raymond or Freeport.
Owners Peter and Kim Erskine pride themselves upon importing with a mindset of having “a little bit of something for everyone!”.
